Because I recently required an official SEGA
brand Saturn link-up cable it was time to test
those nifty link-up modes again. The first 'victim' was DOOM.
And low and behold:
it worked. Having teared my hairs out some time ago, (because
I just couldn't get it work) it
ended up that the cable I was using (some sh*tty Blaze cable,
the SEGA cable just was a b*tch
to find so there really was no choice but to buy a 3rd party
one) wouldn't work with either
Gebockers (Crazy Jap Virtual On clone) Hexen
or Doom. So leave that Blaze one on the
shelves of gamestores to collect dust is my advice.
Here's some movies I made (PAL version, I'll do some
movies of the JAP version sometime as well) to give you an impression what it is
like. Overall, it's pretty cool. Especially COOP is a lot
of fun. You can see the other player
on the map (see first movie) and at the end of each level you can some stats for each
player. (see 3rd movie) Deathmatch is a little less fun, because most of the levels
weren't really made for 1 on 1 action. Some of the wider levels can be fun, though..

BUT..WHAT
DO I NEED?
- |
*2 SATURNS (Any region)
*2 PAL or JAP COPIES OF DOOM
*A SEGA BRAND LINK UP CABLE
AND OF COURSE YOU COULD USE:
*A FRIEND (WHO KICKED MY ASS..
>_<)

UPDATE JULY 2005
Thought I'd give you
some more info: You could buy either PAL or JAP
copies of DOOM or even one of both (still works without
problems!) The PAL
version can be bought for next to nothing (< $10) and is
really easy to find.
The downside is that the PAL version run at 50hz and has a
small bug that
leaves the 'press fire to respawn' message on screen. The JAP
version of
DOOM is considerably harder to find and generally more
expensive, but
runs at a nice 60hz and has the small respawn bug fixed. The
choice as
they say, is yours. Summed up:
|
PAL
 |
JAP
 |
|
+ Cheap
+ Easy to find
- Has a small bug
- Runs at 50hz |
+ Small
respawn bug fixed
+ Runs at 60hz
- Expensive
- Hard to find |
|
|
Overall judgement:
8/10
(PAL)
8.2/10
(JAP)
